Claire’s Accessories, the jewellery and fashion accessories retailer, is set to close its Southend branch, marking another big-brand exit from the city’s High Street and adding to a long list of recent closures that have changed the local retail scene.
The store’s closure follows challenges at Claire’s nationally. The business entered administration in early 2026, putting hundreds of stores and around 1,000 jobs at risk across the UK and Ireland.
Administrators from Kroll were appointed after the company once again faced insolvency, despite a rescue deal in 2025 that had saved a number of outlets. Retail analysts say the troubles reflect deeper structural issues in how consumers shop today.
Locally, this means a familiar presence on the city’s High Street will soon be gone. Claire’s has long been a fixture for teenagers and young shoppers seeking affordable jewellery, accessories and piercings, and its departure will leave another empty unit amid a growing vacancy problem.
Southend has seen a steady stream of big-brand closures over recent years, with national and local names alike disappearing from the city centre:
Claire’s administrators as well as retail experts point to several broad factors affecting the ability of high street shops to remain viable:
These macroeconomic pressures reflect nationwide trends seen on high streets across the UK, where business closures have accelerated and many chains have restructured or downsized to survive.
Residents have reacted with concern about the latest brand name to leave Southend High Street.
Daryl Skinner said: “What’s the betting when Claire accessories closes it’ll be turned into another mobile phone shop.”
Neill Tobin added: “If people didn’t buy online then the high street would be thriving.”
The comments reflect a familiar divide, with some blaming changing shopping habits, while others point to a lack of variety and long-term vision for the city centre as more national names disappear.
The city council and local business groups have been proposing regeneration strategies aimed at diversifying the High Street with leisure, cultural attractions and independent traders, but the pace of change remains a challenge.
Claire’s final trading dates in Southend have not yet been confirmed, with clearance sales expected in the coming weeks as stock is reduced ahead of closure.
