A Volkswagen car caught fire in the Tesco Extra supermarket car park in Southend today.

Shocked shoppers watched the fire take hold of the car, while awaiting for the fire service to arrive.

Police officers were at the scene directing people away from the area. One of the officers also reportedly helped move other cars away from the burning vehicle.

Once firefighters arrived, they quickly extinguished the fire.

Hasina Miah was a family member of the man who owned the car. She told Your Southend: “The car belonged to my uncle. Both my Auntie and Uncle are safe and well and have not been injured in this tragedy. The car was also recently only bought from a trader in Essex.”

The Tesco Extra store on Prince Avenue in Southend-on-Sea is one of the major supermarkets serving the city.
