Emergency road closure: Spa Road in Hockley shut due to complex water main repair

Drivers and residents in Hockley are facing significant disruption as Spa Road remains closed in both directions while engineers battle to repair a complicated water main leak.

The closure, which came into effect at 9pm last night under the railway bridge, has forced diversions across the area, with commuters and emergency services struggling to navigate the sudden change.

Essex & Suffolk Water has confirmed the road will remain shut throughout today, Tuesday 25 February, as their teams work to fix the issue.

Repair more complicated than first thought

The water company has explained that what initially seemed like a routine leak repair turned out to be far more challenging than expected.

“A leak was reported at the end of last week, and once our technicians started digging, we realised the repair was a lot more complicated than first thought,” said a spokesperson for Essex & Suffolk Water.

“In order to do the repair properly and for our colleagues to work safely, we have no option but to close the road. We will work as quickly as possible so the road can be reopened.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank everyone in advance for understanding.”

Frustration as road remains closed

For local residents and commuters, the sudden closure has caused confusion and delays. Some are concerned about the lack of visible progress at the site.

“There were plenty of angry faces this morning as they found the road is closed completely, and westbound traffic is being diverted down Plumbrow Avenue for a very lengthy runaround,” said Michael Hayes, a local resident.

Angela Hooper, another Hockley resident, raised concerns about the impact on emergency services after witnessing an ambulance struggle to navigate the disruption.

“I saw an ambulance with blue lights on having to turn around at the station as they couldn’t get through. I hope the delay doesn’t cost someone’s life. The worst thing is that there were no workmen there,” she said.

Buses diverted as disruption continues

Public transport has also been affected, with Arriva bus service 7 unable to use its usual route. The service is currently diverting via the route normally used by service 8 until Spa Road reopens, adding further delays for passengers.

Drivers and residents are advised to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for journeys while work continues.

Essex & Suffolk Water has not yet provided an estimated completion time for the works.
