Major rescue operation launched to rescue “a man in the sea” on Westcliff seafront

A major emergency response was launched along Southend seafront on Thursday night after reports of a man in the water near Western Esplanade in Westcliff.

The incident triggered a multi-agency operation involving air, sea and land crews. A HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter was sent to search the coastline from above, along with a police helicopter.

Southend RNLI launched both its hovercraft and lifeboat, while the Southend and Canvey Coastguard Rescue Teams searched the shoreline. Essex Police and the East of England Ambulance Service also attended.

The alarm was raised shortly before 10pm on Thursday, with emergency services responding to concerns for the welfare of a man who was reported to be in the sea.

Dog walker Nicola Kressy, who witnessed the response, said: “I had directed the officers to what I thought was a seal in the water.”

Two ambulances and an ambulance officer vehicle were sent to the scene as part of the coordinated rescue effort.

A spokesperson for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called just before 10pm on Thursday with concerns for the welfare of a man on Western Esplanade in Westcliff-on-Sea. The man was transported to Southend University Hospital for further care.”

Local residents watching the unfolding incident praised the professionalism of the crews involved. Jennie Cooke said: “My thoughts for the person involved and who are close to them. Also to all the emergency services on scene.”

Another resident, Sue Meader, added: “We are so lucky to have such amazing emergency support. Thank you to you all. What an amazing job you do.”

The condition of the man has not been confirmed.
