A man has been charged following a violent incident involving a knife and a vehicle in Southend city centre in the early hours of Sunday 5 April.
Essex Police say officers were called to reports of “people fighting” in Chichester Road at around 2am. It became clear that the “disturbance” had quickly escalated into serious violence, with armed officers being dispatched to the scene.
When police arrived, they found a man who had been both stabbed and hit by a car. He was taken to hospital with what officers have described as “potentially life-changing” injuries.
Following the attack, two suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting a major police response. A police helicopter was deployed above Southend to assist with the search.
With support from Southend City Council CCTV operators, officers were able to quickly identify the vehicle involved. It was later located at Southend Hospital.
A second vehicle believed to be connected to the incident was then safely stopped by police on the M25 in Hertfordshire.
Leon Makumbi, 29, of Burford Way, Hitchin, has now been charged with GBH with intent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Two other people, a man and a woman who were arrested on suspicion of GBH, have since been released on conditional bail while enquiries continue.
Police say their investigation remains ongoing.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents about rising violence in the area.
Kevin Burt said: “It should be 25 years for carrying a knife. That will solve the problem!”
Pat Russell added: “Crime seems to be escalating in Southend and surrounding areas. Heavier punishments need to be in place to reduce the violence.”
Police are urging anyone with information or footage relating to the incident to come forward.
