Masked gang smash into Southend jewellery shop with sledgehammers and pickaxes

Three masked men smashed their way into a jewellery shop in Southend city centre on Monday morning, causing “substantial damage” with tools including a sledgehammer.

The aggravated burglary at Alex John Jewellers triggered a rapid police response across the city centre, including Weston Road near The Last Post pub, as witnesses reported seeing the dramatic scene unfolding in broad daylight.

Essex Police confirmed they were called at around 10.15am on Monday 16 February following reports that the suspects were smashing their way into the store.

Street Rangers from Southend BID ran in to try to stop the burglary before the suspects fled the scene in a car, appearing to crash into another car while making their escape.

Suspects tracked down after “fast-paced enquiries”

Essex Police says that officers quickly began searching for the suspects after the raid.

Following their “fast-paced enquiries”, a vehicle was tracked down and stopped in Bedfordshire a short time later. Two men were arrested and are now being brought back to Essex Police custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Marcus Dodd said:
“I’m aware this is a concerning incident for the public to witness in Southend and it needed a strong policing response.

“Within minutes of the extremely helpful calls and information given by members of the public, we were responding and on the scene. Thanks to this work, two suspects are in custody, important evidence has been seized and our investigation is progressing well.”

Shock and praise from local residents

The incident has sparked a strong reaction from residents and people who witnessed the events unfold.

Cassie Smith said: “I hope Alex and everyone is okay, they’re lovely people in there. It’s a family run business – this is terrible.”

Prince Jewel said: “Wow in broad daylight! I’m glad no one seems to have been hurt.”

Eileen High added: “That car that tried to stop them getting away at the end – what a hero.”

Colin Spall said: “Well done to the people who stopped them. These thugs think they can do what they want and no one is going to intervene.”

Police enquiries remain ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to come forward by reporting online via the Essex Police website, their Live Chat service, or by calling 101 quoting incident 287 of 16 February.

Who are the Southend BID Street Rangers?

Southend Street Rangers are part of the Southend BID (Business Improvement District) team and work to support businesses and visitors across the city centre. The service is funded by local businesses through a BID levy.

Street Rangers patrol key areas throughout the day, acting as extra eyes and ears on the ground. Their role includes assisting businesses, helping visitors, reporting issues, supporting events, and working closely with police and partners to help keep the city centre safe and welcoming.

Their quick response during Monday’s incident highlights the role they play in supporting the local business community during emergencies.
