A man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries following a collision between a car and a motorcycle on Queensway in Southend.
The crash happened shortly before 7.30pm on Sunday 24 August, near the slip road that connects the dual carriageway to the seafront.
Paramedics were seen treating the injured motorcyclist as he lay on the road. Witnesses at the scene said he appeared conscious while being attended to by emergency crews.
Police officers closed off part of the road while they carried out enquiries and spoke with drivers at the scene. Traffic quickly built up in the surrounding area, with the seafront already busy at the time with families, day-trippers and car enthusiasts heading to a car meet event.
In a statement, Essex Police said that no arrests had yet been made. A spokesperson said:
“Officers were called to a serious collision between a car and a motorcycle in Queensway, Southend, shortly before 7.30pm on Sunday 24 August.
“One casualty, a man, was treated for serious injuries at the scene and taken on to hospital.
“His condition is not believed to be life-threatening. Enquiries are ongoing.”
Motorcyclists remain one of the most vulnerable groups on the roads. In Essex, police figures show that motorcycles account for around 20 per cent of all fatal and serious injury collisions, despite making up only a small percentage of total road users.
Riders are statistically far more likely to be killed or seriously injured than drivers of cars or vans, with risk factors including reduced visibility, higher exposure in collisions, and greater prevalence of accidents on urban roads like Queensway.
Enquiries into the circumstances of the collision remain ongoing.
