A murder investigation has been launched after a serious assault in Westcliff on Thursday evening.
The incident happened shortly before 6pm, near to the junction of Hamlet Court Road and London Road. Police were alerted to reports that two people were being “seriously assaulted”.
Eyewitnesses said a man was being treated in the road “covered in blood”. An Air Ambulance was dispatched and landed near to the incident, with multiple police units and paramedics deployed.
One man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.
The second man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.
Police have arrested a 55-year-old man on suspicion of murder.
A large police cordon remains in place at the crime scene, where a forensic investigation tent has also been errecred.
Detective Inspector Lisa Hurrell said “We are at the really early stages of this investigation and officers are working quickly to establish the circumstances.
“A cordon will remain in place on Hamlet Court Road overnight and tomorrow.
“We are being supported by members of the public who witnessed the assault and we are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed something or have any dashcam footage to contact us.”
