Emergency services, including police, firefighters, and ambulance crews, rushed to Leigh-on-Sea railway station this morning following reports of an incident on the tracks.
Network Rail Response teams were also deployed to the scene to assist with the situation.
As a result of the emergency, train services on the c2c network faced significant disruption. Many trains were delayed or cancelled while authorities worked to manage the incident and clear the area.
A spokesperson for c2c issued a statement advising passengers of the disruption: “Due to trespassers on the railway at Leigh-on-Sea, all lines will be blocked. Train services running across the whole c2c network may be cancelled or delayed. We apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate passengers’ patience as emergency teams respond.”
British Transport Police confirmed they were called to the station at 7:15 am following reports of a casualty on the tracks. A spokesperson said: “Officers attended the scene alongside paramedics. A person was located and has been taken to hospital. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”
According to figures from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR), around 350 people are hit by trains in the UK each year, with a significant proportion of these incidents involving trespassing or mental health crises.
British Transport Police and railway operators continuously work on initiatives to improve safety, including increased patrols, public awareness campaigns, and support for vulnerable individuals.
Train services in the Leigh-on-Sea area have since resumed. Authorities are continuing their investigations into the circumstances surrounding this morning’s incident.
