Southend’s first New Years Eve seafront fireworks draw large crowds

Southend’s first New Years Eve seafront fireworks are being hailed a huge success, drawing a “much larger than expected” turnout.

Councillors are already thinking about how to make the event better for next NYE, with the potential to include music during the fireworks displays too.

The cost of the fireworks was split 50:50 between Southend City Council and the seafront businesses, which amounted to around £7,000 each.

Councillor Daniel Cowan, leader of the council, said: “The seafront was absolutely buzzing with excitement, packed with people who were thoroughly enjoying themselves. It was heartening to see such a positive atmosphere, and it undoubtedly provided a significant boost to our local businesses.

“The event was not only fun but also exceptionally safe and well-managed. Everything went off without a hitch, which is a testament to the meticulous planning and hard work that went into it.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt praise to the security teams provided by our local businesses. Their efforts were pivotal in ensuring everything ran smoothly, and we owe them a great deal of gratitude.

“A huge thank you to everyone involved in making the event such a resounding success, especially Star Amusements and Southend Tourism Partnership.”

Councillor Matt Dent added: “I consider it to be good value for money. It gave local families and residents free entertainment, which at a time of high cost of living pressures isn’t to be sniffed at. And it gave a big business boost to those businesses on the seafront which remained open and saw a lot of custom from the crowds there to enjoy the fireworks.”
