Tragedy in Southend as person falls from multi-storey car park

Chichester Road in Southend has been closed following a heartbreaking incident in which a person fell from the Victoria Shopping Centre car park.

It is understood that the person sadly passed away at the scene.

The area was busy at the time, with multiple buses picking up passengers. Witnesses were left in shock as emergency services rushed to the scene.

Among them was Sue Sawkins, who was a passenger on an Arriva bus at the time. Speaking about the tragedy, she said: “I was on the bus and witnessed it. It was awful. He’s at peace now.”

Amy Spicer was another bus passenger. She said: “I was on my bus with my 18 month old. It was so awful. I witnessed the whole thing, I’ve not stopped crying and cannot get the image out my head. But I hope he’s at peace. Thinking of the family at this awful time.”

Residents living opposite the car park also shared their shock and sadness after seeing the events unfold.

An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said:

“We were called at 11am with reports of a man on a multi-storey car park in Queensway, Southend. An ambulance and ambulance officer vehicle were sent to the scene alongside other emergency services. 

“Sadly, the man fell from the building and died from his injuries.”

A spokesperson for Essex Police added: “We were called to reports of a man on a multi-storey car park in Queensway, Southend at around 11am on Friday 28 February.

“Emergency services attended and engaged with the man. The man fell from the building and, sadly, has died.”
