Coastguard teams conduct missing person search exercise on Two Tree Island

Coastguard teams from Southend-on-Sea, Canvey Island, and South Woodham Ferrers braved biting cold winds during a four-hour missing person search exercise on Two Tree Island today.

The exercise simulated the search for a missing man, who was eventually found concealed on the edge of the marshland, cleverly hidden from sight. Once located, the team quickly assessed the casualty’s condition, stabilised him, and executed a careful extraction from the difficult terrain.

This realistic scenario was designed to test and enhance the Coastguard’s search and rescue capabilities. As a Category 1 responder for Search and Rescue, HM Coastguard officers are expertly trained in advanced search techniques, which are crucial during high-risk missing person incidents along the coastline. These skills are not just limited to coastal areas; HM Coastguard frequently collaborates with police forces across the UK, deploying both on the coast and inland to assist with critical missing person cases.

“Our teams are trained to the highest standard to respond to challenging scenarios, ensuring the safety of the public and increasing the chances of a successful rescue,” said a Coastguard spokesperson. “Exercises like today’s are vital in maintaining our readiness and effectiveness.”

The operation also highlighted the importance of community support. “We deeply appreciate the continued support from our local communities. It enables our officers to carry out their duties effectively,” the spokesperson added.

Residents and visitors are reminded that if they see anyone in trouble on or near the coast, they should immediately dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Quick action can make the difference between life and death.
