Families enjoying the sunshine in one of Southend’s most popular parks were left horrified after a fight erupted in front of children and parents on Saturday afternoon.
The incident happened in Southchurch Park at around 3.50pm on 16 August, prompting a rapid response from police after a 999 call reported a group of people fighting. Officers said they were on scene “within minutes” and arrested four people within half an hour of the first call.
Four people were arrested in total: One man was taken to hospital for treatment, while three others – a 17-year-old boy and two men aged 20 and 29 – were taken straight into custody on suspicion of affray.
The park was busy with dozens of families, many having picnics near the lake and cricket pitch, when the disturbance broke out. Parents described seeing children quickly ushered away as officers moved in to deal with the situation.
A local resident who was in the park with her family told us: “It was a really upsetting thing to witness. There were children playing, people feeding the ducks, and suddenly it all turned chaotic. Everyone was just trying to get out of the way.”
Essex Police are now urging anyone who saw the fight or recorded it on their phones to come forward.
A spokesperson said: “There were a number of people in the park at the time it took place who would have seen what happened and we need witnesses to come forward. If you have any information, CCTV, dash cam or other footage in relation to this incident, then please get in contact with us.”
Those able to help should quote incident 928 of 16 August when contacting police.
Southchurch Park is one of the busiest family destinations in Southend, known for its large lake, café and playground, and its proximity to the seafront.
Earlier this year, police had already stepped up patrols in the park following concerns from local people about drug dealing and anti-social behaviour. Saturday’s incident has now heightened fears among some residents about safety in the area.
