This December, a dazzling and unique motorised Christmas display is lighting up a home in Southend, offering a magical experience for children and families.
Complete with a kid-friendly control panel and a free candy cane vending machine, the attraction brings holiday cheer while raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Martin Pyke and his wife Allison are the creative minds behind the incredible display.
Each animatronic feature, from a towering 11-foot Ferris wheel to a teddy bear ski lift and a flying Santa, is handmade by the couple.
Their passion for spreading joy while supporting a good cause has become a cherished tradition in the community.
Martin shared his motivation: “Macmillan did so much for our family during a difficult time. This display is our way of giving back and making people smile. Seeing the kids take charge at the control panel and families enjoying themselves is the best gift we could ask for.”
The display, believed to be the only visitor-operated mechanical Christmas exhibit in the UK, drew over 6,000 visitors last year and raised more than £5,000 for the Macmillan team at Southend Hospital. This year, the Pykes hope to surpass that amount.
Neighbour Ade Parker praised the family’s thoughtful approach: “Every year, they send each neighbour a lovely letter explaining what they’re doing and even apologising for any potential inconvenience. But honestly, it’s no trouble at all—it’s such a beautiful attraction for the whole community.”
Visitors have already been wowed by this year’s spectacle. Sharon Hatton, who attended with her granddaughter, said, “She absolutely loved it. A huge thank you to the family for dedicating their time to organizing this and spreading a bit of joy.”
The display is open daily from 5 pm to 8 pm until December 28th, weather permitting.
