A motorcyclist was taken to hospital after a serious crash involving a car on Hobleythick Lane in Westcliff.
Emergency services were called to the junction with Midhurst Avenue at around 5.40pm on Monday 14 July. The road was blocked in both directions for some time, causing some delays near the A127 during rush hour.
An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said:
“We were called at 5.40pm on Monday 14 July to a road traffic collision involving a motorbike and a car on the junction of Midhurst Avenue and Hobleythick Lane in Westcliff-on-Sea. An ambulance and rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene. An adult man was transported to Southend University Hospital for further assessment and treatment.”
Southend City Council leader Daniel Cowan added: “My thoughts are with those involved.”
This incident adds to growing concern over motorcycle safety on UK roads. According to Department for Transport figures, there were over 16,000 reported motorcycle casualties in Britain last year, with more than 5,000 classed as serious injuries and 350 deaths. Motorcyclists make up just 1% of road users, but account for around 20% of all road deaths.
Residents living near the junction say it’s not the first time they’ve seen a crash there. One local resident commented: “Cars fly round that corner – we’ve seen a few near misses before – it was only a matter of time.”
