Southend Police seized more than 10,000 nitrous oxide canisters over the weekend, with an estimated street value exceeding £4,000.

Officers also arrested a man on suspicion of intent to supply the substance, which has become a growing concern for local residents.

A police spokesperson highlighted frustration within the community, saying: “Residents tell us they are fed up of seeing the nitrous oxide canisters discarded around the borough.”

The operation took place in Southchurch in the early hours of Sunday, 24 November. Officers stopped a car at approximately 12:20am and, upon searching the vehicle, discovered the large haul of steel canisters.

A 27-year-old man from Southend was arrested on suspicion of possession of a psychoactive substance with intent to supply. He was later released under investigation as enquiries continue.

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as ‘laughing gas,’ is legally used in the catering industry to make whipped cream. However, its recreational use has surged in recent years, with people inhaling the gas from balloons for a short-lived high. While some may perceive it as a relatively harmless substance, medical professionals have warned of serious health risks, including oxygen deprivation, nerve damage, and even sudden death in extreme cases.

The canisters are often found littering streets, parks, and public spaces, causing both environmental and safety concerns. Many local residents have expressed their dismay over the issue.

Hazel Eileen Benjamin, a concerned Southend resident, shared her thoughts: “When I see these, I always feel sad that another generation is being lost to drugs or addictions. Life is worth so much more than being wasted.”

The seizure formed part of a wider crackdown on the illegal supply and misuse of nitrous oxide in Southend. Police have urged residents to report any suspicious activity and continue to work on tackling anti-social behaviour linked to substance abuse.
