To mark mental health week, this new kraken post box topper was unveiled on Southend Pier. The woolly kraken is even holding some knitted ice creams!
A spokesperson for the charity Southend Mind, who installed it, said: “This amazing topper was kindly made for us by an anonymous crafter to help raise awareness during Mental Health Awareness Week.
“We’re the local Mind in the area, independent and a separate charity from the National Mind charity. If anyone would like to support us and help fund local services, please consider donating this week. Every £ really does make a difference during these difficult times, thank you!”
The charity (South East and Central Essex Mind) closed its offices in Southchurch Road in March 2024, to help save money from increasing costs and high energy bills. The charity had occupied part of the site since the 1980’s when the charity was known as Southend District Mental Health Association.
The increased need for mental health services over the years led to the shop that was once a bed shop, to be transformed into a mental health hub called the Jubilee Centre in 2014.
The charity said the decision to close the Southchurch location means that they can use donations effectively and ensure they can continue to be there for those that need their support.
The charity now operates hybrid and flexible working for both staff and service delivery, reaching people most vulnerable by offering support via phone or online, as well as more accessible locations for face to face meetings.
