British flag march’s small turnout blamed on poor weather

A British flag march that took place in Southend city centre on Saturday 20 September, attracted around 40 participants at its height. The organiser has since attributed the lower-than-expected turnout to poor weather conditions earlier in the day.

Francess Kray who organised the march had expected the numbers of attendees to draw counter-protesters too. However, no counter-protest groups arrived in the High Street.

The demonstration was promoted as a celebration of “British flags and heritage,” with attendees gathering in the city centre before marching along the High Street. It was advertised as being a “peaceful march open to all individuals who consider themselves to be a British citizen.”

Speaking after the march, Francess, who is affiliated to UKIP, said: “To be fair, considering the weather was not great earlier in Southend, I was more than happy with the turnout.”

At least ten police officers were present to oversee proceedings, though the event passed peacefully without any incidents.

A low-key and peaceful demonstration

Participants assembled outside the Odeon cinema in Southend High Street from 12pm, where they shared views on British heritage and played music through a small portable speaker.

They also held a minute’s silence in memory of Charlie Kirk, the American conservative activist who was assassinated last week.

Some attendees dressed in Saint George costumes, while others carried or waved Union flags. A few also flew flags from mobility scooters as the march made its way through the busy High Street.

Despite the limited numbers, the group made their presence known with flags, but the atmosphere remained calm throughout.

While some passers-by stopped to watch, most people continued their shopping in the city centre without interruption.
