Demonstrators from the ‘Southend Stands With Ukraine’ group gathered in the High Street yesterday to thank local people for their continued support throughout the ongoing conflict.
The peaceful demonstration recognised the solidarity and resilience shown by British people since the war in Ukraine first began over three years ago. Flags, banners and handwritten notes of thanks lined the street, creating a striking scene that caught the attention of shoppers and passers-by.
Among those showing their appreciation was Volodymyr Shkuratov, who passionately declared, “Glory to Ukraine!” He added, “Heartfelt thanks to the local people for their continued support, resilience, and unwavering spirit. Your dedication and strength inspire hope and courage in these challenging times. Together, we stand strong for freedom and a brighter future.”
The event came just weeks after Southend West MP David Burton-Sampson made an emotional journey to Ukraine. Describing the trip as “highly emotional,” Mr Burton-Sampson travelled to areas heavily affected by the war to see first-hand the realities Ukrainians are facing daily.
Upon his return to the UK, he addressed Parliament on 27 February during a session marking the third anniversary of the invasion. He shared, “Whilst there, I experienced air raids and saw the full extent of the horror Ukrainians were subjected to on a daily basis. I wanted to make sure I spoke in the House of Commons today as we marked the third anniversary of the war. I shared my experiences of the past week, including seeing first-hand the tragic reality of war for so many Ukrainians.”
His powerful words added a deeply personal perspective to what remains a devastating global issue.
Despite some differing views on the demonstration, the atmosphere in the High Street remained calm and respectful throughout the day. Demonstrators stood quietly, handing out Ukrainian flags to those who wanted to show their support.
The ‘Southend Stands With Ukraine’ group has held several events since the conflict began, and organisers say they are determined to keep Ukraine in the public consciousness as the war shows no immediate signs of ending.
