Emotional tributes have poured in from friends, family and the wider community after the funeral of 14-year-old Harry Crysell.
Harry tragically died on 23 January after suffering a sudden brain aneurysm. On Thursday 12 February, as his funeral procession passed The Fitzwimarc School in Rayleigh, pupils stood shoulder-to-shoulder in their red uniforms, clapping in honour of his life.
The tribute was described by those present as both heartbreaking and powerful, with classmates, teachers and staff coming together to support one another during an unimaginably difficult moment.
A friend of the devastated family said:
“Harry was a fun-loving, kind-hearted 14-year-old who brought so much joy to everyone around him. Harry’s infectious smile, a wonderful sense of humour, and a way of making people feel instantly welcome is how many will remember him by.
“Tragically, Harry passed away following a sudden brain aneurysm, leaving his family and friends heartbroken. Harry is deeply loved and will always be remembered for his bright spirit, his laughter, and the happiness he brought into the world.”
Father thanks the community for overwhelming support
Harry’s father, Dan Crysell, has spoken on behalf of his family following what he described as an “outpouring of love” from the local community.
He told Your Southend:
“We want to thank our amazing community for the following our son’s passing.
“Every message, comments, and donation has reminded us just how special he was and how many hearts he touched. The support has been overwhelming, and we are so grateful to be surrounded by such kindness.
“Our boy was one of a kind, gentle, bright, and simply too good for this world. We will carry him in our hearts forever and love him always.”
Friends and community share tributes
Lacey Jane said:
“I’ve never felt prouder to be part of the Fitzwimarc school. It was for such a heartbreaking reason, something no family should ever have to go through, but seeing our whole school and community come together in a sea of red was incredibly moving. The staff, the students, the flags, the umbrellas, the balloons… every detail showed how much love there was. It was one of the saddest things I’ve ever witnessed, but also one of the most powerful. Rest easy, Harry.”
Honey Beckett said:
“He was the most special friend to me, growing up with him has been the highlight of my life and I am so honoured to have had such a bond with him. I’m so glad I got to be apart of his life, he was truly amazing and I’ll forever miss him. Emma, Dan and Liv are the most incredible people I’ve ever known, sending my deepest condolences and love to you all during this heartbreaking time. Harry will always live on in memory, I’ll forever love you. Rest easy my Harry.”
Steve Carr added:
“Being a father of a 12 year old and a 15 year old I can not start to imagine what the family is going through right now. My heartfelt condolences to Harry’s family, friends and students.”
Fundraising and memorial plans
A fundraising page set up to support Harry’s family has raised £33k. Donations made via the JustGiving page will help his loved ones and support ways to remember him in a meaningful way, with any remaining funds set to be donated to Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The Fitzwimarc School is also planning a memorial in Harry’s honour.
Understanding brain aneurysms
A brain aneurysm is a bulge or weakness in a blood vessel in the brain. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms and can go undetected for years, but if one ruptures it can lead to a life-threatening brain haemorrhage.
Possible warning signs can include:
- Sudden severe headache often described as the worst headache ever experienced
- Blurred or double vision
- Neck pain or stiffness
- Sensitivity to light
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sudden confusion or loss of consciousness
Treatment depends on the size and location of the aneurysm and whether it has ruptured. Options can include surgery or minimally invasive procedures to prevent bleeding or further complications.
Harry’s death has deeply affected the Rayleigh community, with many continuing to share memories and messages of support as the town comes together around his family.
Rest in peace, Harry.
Harry Crysell – 16 May 2011 to 23 January 2026.
