Southenders have been calling for SALVO the clown to turn on Southend’s Christmas lights this year, to celebrate his retirement from the High Street.
SALVO has been an iconic character in Southend for over three decades, bringing smiles to thousands of children’s faces with his balloon creations.
October 2024 half term will be his last appearance in Southend High Street.
The organisers of the Big Christmas Switch On event noticed the suggestion to have SALVO turn on the lights and they asked him if he would take on the role.
SALVO said: “It’s such a prestigious occasion and I just hope and pray I don’t let anybody down on the night. I’m already a bag of nerves because of all the famous people who have gone before me and I don’t feel worthy of such an honour.”

The Big Switch event on will take place this year on Saturday 16th November. There will be live music and special guests on the Main Stage by The Victoria shopping centre from 12pm.
The Big Switch On will be followed by the final free fireworks display on Southend seafront at 7:30pm.
Southend City BID chair George Bejko-Cowlbeck said: “The excitement is certainly building as this hugely nostalgic event is just one week away. With so much going on throughout the day there will be something for everyone to enjoy. A fantastic event that marks the start of what will no doubt be a bustling and busy festive period”
