WHSmith brand to disappear from the high street – what is the new brand ‘TG Jones’?

One of the most iconic names on the British high street is set to vanish after more than two centuries, as WH Smith’s store network has been sold to a private equity firm in a deal worth £76 million.

Modella Capital has acquired all 480 high street stores, marking the end of an era for the beloved retailer. However, the sale does not include WH Smith’s travel locations, meaning stores in airports and train stations will continue to operate under the familiar name.

Introducing TGJones: The new name for WH Smith stores

In a move designed to maintain a sense of continuity for shoppers, all WH Smith high street stores will be rebranded as TGJones. But what does the new name mean?

Unlike WH Smith, which carries the legacy of its 233-year history, TGJones is a brand-new creation by Modella Capital. The name is believed to have been inspired by Welsh footballer TG Jones, who played for Everton and Wales before later running a newsagent in North Wales.

The choice reflects a connection to British heritage and the retail tradition that these stores have long represented.

A spokesperson for Modella Capital commented on the change, saying: “TG Jones carries the same sense of family and reflects these stores being at the heart of everyone’s high street. We hope the name will resonate with people across the UK and keep the sense of a family business.”

What will change in TGJones stores?

Despite the rebrand, customers can expect a familiar shopping experience. The stores will continue to sell the same range of products, from books and magazines to stationery and snacks. Essential services such as Post Office counters and in-store Toys “R” Us outlets will also remain, ensuring continuity for regular shoppers.

However, Modella Capital has hinted at plans for the future. The firm has stated that it will work closely with store management to introduce new ranges and offerings, potentially modernising the shopping experience to attract a broader audience.

The transformation of WH Smith’s high street stores into TGJones marks a major shift in British retail history. While the name may change, the aim is to keep these stores as a vital part of the high street—continuing to serve generations of customers just as WH Smith has done since its founding in 1792.
