Another ‘unauthorised’ car enthusiast event took place on Southend seafront this evening. The event was advertised on social media as the ‘Southend Shutdown’ and saw hundreds of cars and motorbikes descended onto the seafront.
At the height of the event between 7pm – 9pm, the sheer amount of cars caused traffic to crawl in both directions along the seafront.
Our on-site reporter described a bustling mix of classic cars, modified vehicles, and motorcycles. While the atmosphere was electric, the event did not have council support as it had not been planned through the correct channels. Police and safety officers were deployed to manage the situation and ensure public safety.
Southend’s history of car culture and council crackdowns
Southend’s association with car enthusiasts dates back decades, with the town’s scenic seafront serving as a magnet for car cruises and impromptu gatherings. However, this tradition often conflicts with local authorities due to noise complaints, anti-social behaviour and safety concerns.
Over the years, Southend City Council has implemented measures like a Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) and enhanced police patrols to curb the events. Despite these efforts, the appeal of Southend’s seafront continues to draw car enthusiasts, leading to ongoing challenges for the council and Essex Police.
Balancing the tradition of Southend car cruises with the interests of residents and visitors remains an ongoing challenge.
