A former bakery shop in Westcliff has found new life as Crave Bakery and Coffee House opens its doors – marking a major milestone for the young business just six months after it first launched in Leigh-on-Sea.
The new Crave Bakery officially opened in April on Prince Avenue moving into the former Wenzel’s unit, which had been left empty since its abrupt closure in September 2014.
The transformation from disused premises to a sleek, modern coffee shop and bakery is a welcome change for locals.
Crave’s original branch opened on Leigh Broadway in October 2024, and quickly gained a loyal customer base thanks to its eye-catching bakes and strong community vibe.
“At Crave, we don’t just bake, we create,” owner Matt Davis said. “From our signature cookie cups to melt-in-your-mouth doughnuts, brownies and croissants – everything is made fresh daily. And if you haven’t tried our flassants yet (that’s a flaky croissant with a twist), then you’re in for a treat.”
The business is expanding fast. With the new Westcliff store now open, Crave Bakery & Coffee House joins sister shops in Leigh-on-Sea, Bromley and Charlton. The brand’s mission? To satisfy sweet cravings and serve up comfort food with style.
A resident living nearby said: “It’s great to see something finally happening with the old Wenzel’s. The new shop looks amazing and you can smell the fresh pastries from down the road.”
Located at 91 Prince Avenue, Southend-on-Sea, SS2 6RL, the new Crave store offers seating and a welcoming atmosphere. Whether you’re in the mood for a morning coffee, a gooey brownie or a box of cookies to take home, there’s something for everyone.
