Traffic chaos hits Southend and Rochford due to roadworks

Southend and Rochford residents faced a day of severe traffic congestion, as multiple roadworks caused gridlock on key routes.

Tracking data indicated that major roads connecting Southend and Rochford were experiencing crawl speeds of 2-4 miles per hour, significantly disrupting journeys.

Particularly affected was Cuckoo Corner due to a lane closure near The Bell junction for works by Cadent Gas.

Meanwhile, in Rochford, lengthy queues formed in both directions due to one-way traffic lights on Sutton Road. These roadworks are expected to continue until Friday and are being carried out by Anglian Water.

Commenting about the roadworks at The Bell, Southend resident Andrew Tilley said: “Not one piece of gravel or stone has been moved since this morning. It seems that Cadent Gas just have a desire to disrupt residents to the absolute max.”

Utility companies such as Cadent Gas and Anglian Water must obtain a permit before carrying out works on the highway.

An authorised permit allows the utility company to carry out roadworks at a specified location, between the dates shown and they must remain within the terms and conditions of the permit.
